OPERATION SOMETHING TO DO
The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on Love Thy Neighbor Ministries. All was in full swing until March 2020 when most of our outreach was interrupted by the Corona Virus Pandemic. This included the suspension of the Good Neighbor Get Together events. The nursing homes and assisted living facilities closed their doors to visits, musical entertainment, Bible studies and worship. The Stitches for Love program continued but we delivered the hand-made items to the facilities doorstep, not directly to the residents.
To help residents overcome the stress, loneliness, boredom and spiritual starvation of being restricted to their rooms without any visitors we sought the leading of the Holy Spirit and together came up with a program we named “Operation Something to Do.” Beginning in March 2020, with the generosity of our supporters and our Board of Directors, we began purchasing and continue monthly to purchase supplies of large print Word Search and coloring books, colored pencils, crayons, markers, journals and pens, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, cookies, joke books and other reading materials, large print Bibles (English and Spanish) and delivering them for the residents. We also provide self-directed Bible studies with other Christ centered materials and other material we email to the facilities in PDF format. In addition, twelve nursing homes were provided with portable DVD players, earphones, teaching and worship videos courtesy of Vistoso Community Church.
The response to this program has been overwhelming positive from nursing home residents and staff.
My assistant and I went room to room distributing the items you gave us, telling residents they were from Love Thy Neighbor Ministries. From the questions residents asked about your organization and its logo I was able to share Jesus with a number of them.
Thank you for stopping by to drop off the activity materials for our residents. We’ve distributed all the wonderful gifts to the residents and they were delighted and thankful. The jokes brought much laughter. You guys are awesome. Brenda
Thank you for all the great items you dropped off for our residents. We were all touched by your generosity and thoughtfulness. Stay safe and God bless you for your work. Ida
Thank you for the Bible, carrying case, pen, highlighter and notebook. It's good to have God's Word in a print size I can read. William
Hi Steve, thanks so much for the PDFs. They are definitely keeping spirits up!!! Sue
We also began collecting word search puzzle books, coloring books, joke books and other materials from the internet, putting them in PDF format and emailing them to facilities for their residents and email them to 22 facilities monthly. These items have also been well received.
