One on One Visits

“A lonely person needs companionship the way a thirsty person needs water.” W.H. Thomas

Is God calling you to visit in a nursing home or assisted living facility? Do you have the gift of listening or the gift of compassion? Do you have the gift of enthusiasm and 60 minutes a week to pore over photos and share reminiscences? Are you retired and looking for something worthwhile to do? Are you a transplanted snowbird who can share memories and laughter with another snowbird stranded far from home? Are you young and interested in exchanging a little energy for the deep and penetrating wisdom of years? You will cause a lonely person to praise the Lord, because He has not forgotten them.

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27)

If you decide to heed God’s call and visit a resident in a nursing home or assisted living facility – your Neighbor - you will be happy to know that we have developed a comprehensive training program to get you prepared and started.

Each of our volunteers begins their training by reading the book, On Being a Servant of God by Warren Wiersbe. You will then attend a 4½-hour classroom program which involves viewing a video on visiting in nursing homes, a lecture and participation in class discussion. Topics include such things as:

  • who is Love Thy Neighbor Ministries
  • residents’ rights
  • preparing for a visit
  • things to do and not to do during the visit
  • being an active listener

Each volunteer is provided with a copy of our training materials and given information on the free gifts we have available for their Neighbor. It’s a comprehensive program that helps prepare the Christian volunteer for working in the adult long-term care mission field.

Our trained Christian volunteers who have chosen to visit one-on-one with a resident are assisted in selecting a Neighbor at a facility as close as possible to their home. They will befriend their neighbor and encourage them by sharing their time, talents, understanding experience, energy and faith with them.

For those who are called to this ministry, God’s rewards to you will far outweigh your time and efforts!
